Meet The Experts
1QBit’s multidisciplinary team brings decades of R&D experience to tackle challenges in machine learning and data analytics. The idea for an AI-driven chest X-ray diagnostic tool originated from the ten-year vision of Canadian physician, medical innovator, and 1QBit CMO, Deepak Kaura, who saw the potential to apply data science to solve systemic issues in health care. XrAI has been researched and developed by a deeply technical and diverse team of experts led by radiologists.
Chief Medical Officer
MD, FRCPC, MBA
A practicing pediatric interventional radiologist and a health care leader, Deepak is passionate about innovation and technology in health. He is currently co-chairing the CANHealth network, a federally funded integrated health marketplace that stitches together most of Canada’s health authorities. He is an active member of the Canadian Space Agency’s council on Deep Space Healthcare and was the Chairman of the Board of Joule, the Canadian Medical Association’s innovation and commercialization division. Previously, he was the Executive Chairman of Foundational Clinical Services (Radiology, Pathology, Anesthesia, Peri-operative services, Psychiatry, Patient Experience and Innovation) at Sidra Medicine in Qatar, where he helped build and operationalize, from the ground up, a quaternary care women and children’s hospital. He has also been the Subspecialty Chair of Pediatric Radiology at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Chairman of the Radiology department at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. He received his MBA from HEC Paris and has been an active entrepreneur. During his career, Deepak has led initiatives to integrate machine learning into health care. Deepak’s previous faculty appointments include associate professorships at Cornell University and the University of Calgary.
Director, Machine Learning and Quantum-Inspired Solutions
Jaspreet directs the Machine Learning and Quantum-Inspired Optimization division at 1QBit. He is usually busy connecting business with technology, client problems with 1QBit brains, and the company strategy with its on-ground execution. He has over six years of experience in identifying and formulating data-driven quantum and classical solutions for businesses in finance, retail, health care and more. Jas’s undergraduate and postgraduate study was focused on electronics and computer engineering, with a focus on combinatorial optimization, machine learning, and big data. In his free time, Jas likes to campaign for organ donation and sway to Punjabi dhol beats.
Program Manager, Health Care
Natalia holds a Ph.D. in Biomedicine from the University of Barcelona and has conducted over 10 years of biomedical research. In parallel, she complimented her education with project management and business management studies at the University of Toronto. Before joining 1QBit, she worked at the Digital Health Secretariat in the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in Ontario, supporting several programs in digital health care. Natalia is also a dancer and entrepreneur. In 2012, she co-founded Lindy Hop Revolution, a swing dance studio based in Toronto. She coached, performed, and competed nationally and internationally, becoming a Canadian and US champion in her division. She enjoys any outdoor activity and going on adventures with her border collie, Lola.
Ryan is a Business Analyst with 1QBit’s Machine Learning and Quantum-Inspired Optimization team, where he works closely with clients, researchers, and developers to help them execute projects in a variety of industry verticals. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, with a specialization in Entrepreneurship from the University of Victoria. Prior to joining 1QBit, he launched a Calgary-based technology startup to tackle complex data challenges in Canada’s upstream energy industry, where he led business and product development activities. Ryan is also a former sailing coach and spends much of his personal time on, in, or near the water.
Machine Learning and Data Science
Customer Solutions Lead
Dan holds a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics and a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of British Columbia. He has half a decade of combined experience developing hardware and applications for adiabatic quantum computers. His current work at 1QBit includes the design of algorithms to approximate optimal decision policies for problems in stochastic control, and tackling other problems in machine learning. Dan was born too late to explore Earth, too early to explore space, but just in time to explore the potential of machine intelligence.
Ehsan received his Ph.D. in computer science at Simon Fraser University. His main research interests are in algorithms and combinatorial optimization. At 1QBit, Ehsan works on linear-integer programming techniques and develops quantum-inspired algorithms for various optimization problems. He loves sports and books.
Machine Learning Researcher
Ehsan is currently a student at Simon Fraser University, working towards an M.Sc. in computer science with a big data specialization. At 1QBit, he is doing an internship in the machine learning team, working on data science projects. Prior to coming to Vancouver, Ehsan lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for over four years, where he received an M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Manitoba and worked at General Electric. Outside of work and school, Ehsan loves listening to many different genres of music and is learning to play the piano. He enjoys cooking and takes pride in some of his recipes. He is also a big fan of the Bayern Munich football team.
Customer Solutions Lead
Ehsan is a senior machine learning scientist at 1QBit, with expertise in both classical and quantum machine learning. At 1QBit, he has led research and client projects in a variety of different industries. Ehsan holds a Physics Ph.D. from the University of Calgary with a focus on quantum information processing. In his Ph.D. studies, he devised machine learning algorithms for the design of quantum logic gates. After completing his doctorate degree, he continued his research at the University of Calgary as a postdoctoral fellow.
Emran Abu Anas
Technical Lead, Machine Learning Researcher
Emran completed his BS and MS degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. In his master’s program, he worked with ECG signal analysis, artifact removal in CT images, and elastography-based breast cancer detection. He then began his Ph.D. studies at the University of British Columbia, where he worked with enabling ultrasound guidance in scaphoid fracture fixation and prostate segmentation in ultrasound images using deep neural networks. After completing his Ph.D., he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University, exploring the possibilities of deep learning in photo-acoustic, thermal, and ultrasound tomography imaging. After one year of postdoctoral training, he joined 1QBit as a machine learning researcher to bring his expertise in medical image processing into 1QBit’s health care projects. His personal interests include playing table tennis and bowling, reading detective novels, watching suspense and thriller movies, driving boats, and catching fish.
Senior Data Scientist
Mohammed received his MSc in Data Science and engineering at HBKU university, where he worked on implementing deep learning techniques on medical image diagnosis for skin cancer classification and bone age determination. Mohammed is a machine learning enthusiast with a post-graduate certificate in data science from Harvard university—extension school, and his work at 1QBIT is currently focused on implementing the latest AI technologies to solve health care–related challenges. He holds a BSc in Computer Engineering from Alexandria University in Egypt. During this free time, Mohammed plays squash or reads books with his kids.
Machine Learning Researcher
Mohammad is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of British Columbia. He has over seven years of research experience in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, and their application in Medical Imaging and Healthcare Data Analysis. He has led several AI-Medicine interdisciplinary projects at UBC, Vancouver General Hospital (VGH), and prior to that, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He enjoys swimming, martial arts, and photography.
Data Scientist, Machine Learning
Negar completed her master’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Tehran, where she focused on the design and control of intelligent agents and their applications to smart grid and building energy management systems. She has always been interested in designing, building, and deploying machine learning solutions to derive intelligence from data and use it to empirically solve real-world problems. Negar is an avid swimmer, both indoors and outdoors. Like many Persians, she appreciates tasty foods from all around the world, and she likes cooking using new recipes. Negar also enjoys listening to music; piano and percussion instruments are her favourites.
Operations Research Scientist
Pooja completed her Ph.D. in Operations Research at Simon Fraser University, Canada. Her Ph.D. dissertation focuses on quadratic combinatorial optimization problems (QCOP), which mainly explores complexity analysis, algorithm development, domination analysis, equivalent representations, and polynomially solvable cases of QCOP. She earned her Master of Science (MSc) degree in Mathematics from the University of New Brunswick. In her MSc thesis, she developed a specialized simplex-like algorithm for the piecewise linear fractional programming problem. She joined 1QBit as an Operations Research Scientist on the Professional Services Team. Outside of work, Pooja enjoys exploring new places, reading, music, and spending time with friends and family.
Anushervon was born in Dushanbe, Tajikistan and moved to Beijing, China, where he spent ten years before moving to Vancouver, Canada. He is fluent in Russian, Mandarin, English, and Tajik, and enjoys finding similarities between those and other languages. In his free time, Anush enjoys playing music with friends, going on road trips, and picking up new hobbies. Anush holds a bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering from the University of Waterloo and has interned at Capcom and Hootsuite, among other Vancouver companies, prior to joining 1QBit.
Guanchen received his Master of Data Science from the University of British Columbia and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in mechatronic systems engineering from Simon Fraser University. His research focus was on the optimization of electric vehicle charging. Previously, Guanchen worked at a startup developing smart home products and at BC Hydro contributing to smart grid projects. Guanchen loves hiking and playing soccer, basketball, and tennis. When it’s raining in Vancouver, Guanchen does freelance software development and learns how to cook without recipes.
Professional Services Software Development Lead
Jason came to Vancouver by way of Ontario, having earned his bachelor’s degree in Computer Science along the way. He interned in the gaming industry in Montreal and also spent a few years in the Far North working on software in the finance sector. Prior to his time at 1QBit, he returned to BC and worked for many customers on diverse problems in the data, data connectivity, and data analytics fields. When he isn’t working on software, you can usually find him traversing a league or two under the sea, photographing the flora and fauna of Howe Sound.
Jing was born in Beijing, China. He received his Master of Computer Science degree from McMaster University. Before joining 1QBit, Jing worked as a software engineer in IBM CSTL, where he was involved in multiple system software projects, including xCAT and Platform Symphony. He loves traditional Chinese culture and history. In his leisure time, he enjoys swimming, music, and painting.
Machine Learning Researcher, Image Processing
Vsevolod was born and grew up in stern Chelyabinsk, Russia, the city renowned for building tanks and withstanding falling meteors. After receiving a BSc from South Ural State University, he studied at Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland and received a MSc in computational engineering and physics. At 1QBit, he is a part of the machine learning team, where he works on medical image analysis. Outside working hours, you could spot Vsevolod playing chess, rollerblading, or learning to play guitar, sometimes attempting to combine these occupations with no great success.
